Nizharkudai Foundation (USA), in collaboration with ARUDECS, conducted a special Winter Camp at CESCI, Madurai from 27th December to 31st December, for Adi Dravidar children from the western ghats. Nizharkudai and ARUDECS have been sponsoring and supporting the children of tribal villages in Bodi and Periyakulam blocks for the last several years and as part of their “Vaanga Padikalaam” project, this winter camp was conducted.
About 85 children participated and were exposed to various learning and fun activities. Most of these children had not even ventured out of their villages in their life and this was a massive opportunity for them to visit Madurai and meet many people.
Winter camp’s closing ceremony was held on the 30th evening and was graced by Mr. J. Selvam, Vice President, Madurai Chamber of Commerce, Mr. R. Karthick, Executive Member, Madurai Chamber of Commerce and Mr. Sirajudeen, Member, Chamber of Commerce. They interacted with the children and spoke about the value of education. Mr. Selvam also highlighted the physical and mental strength the tribal children have and stressed the need to harness those traits for their own betterment.
Mr. Karthick highlighted the strides that the tribal community has made and how doing well in education will life the entire community out of poverty. The guests distributed prizes and awards to winners of sports and cultural events conducted throughout the winter camp.
The pinnacle of the camp was a visit to Madurai Airport where the children witnessed a flight take off and they were awestruck at the sight of a plane that close. Mr. Osman Ali, Secretary, Madurai District Athletic Association and Jt. Secretary, TNAA spoke with the kids on the sidelines of the airport and spoke about how the children can tap their inherent physical strength to become a good athlete. He promised to conduct special training camp for any children interested in athletics. The guests distributed sweets and snacks to the children as they left for their villages.
